Tokyo Teacher Arrested for Alleged Break-In With Students

Allegations that he taught pupils to target altar items for sale on Mercari, including methods to avoid tax scrutiny, have prompted police to refer two former students to prosecutors.

Overview

  • The Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested 26-year-old teacher Ryosuke Kimura on Wednesday on suspicion of residence trespass and attempted theft for entering a 70s man’s home with two former students on February 2, 2026.
  • Police say the group entered through an unlocked window, searched the interior and left without taking anything after hearing noises in an inner room.
  • Investigators allege Kimura advised students which items to take—telling them, for example, that a Buddhist altar bell could fetch a high price—and showed them how to list goods on the Mercari app.
  • Authorities have already arrested six male students from the same high school in a series of Oshima Town burglaries from April 2025 to February 2026, and police will send documents to prosecutors to seek charges for the two participants in the Feb. 2 incident.
  • Kimura has partly denied entering the house interior and said he went along 'as a dare,' his arrest follows an ongoing probe and possible school and criminal proceedings that remain under way.
