Tokyo Police to Re-Arrest Setagaya Murder Suspect on Stalking and Trespass Allegations

Evidence of hours of waiting plus prior intrusion underpins added counts beyond the ongoing murder case.

Overview

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Police plan to re-arrest Park Yong-jun, 30, on suspicion of violating the Stalker Regulation Law and trespassing as early as Sept. 22.
  • Investigators say he waited near the Setagaya office where Bang Ji-won, 40, was attacked for roughly five hours before the stabbing on Sept. 1.
  • He is suspected of entering the victim's condominium area in late August and sending multiple messages despite being told to stay away.
  • Police previously gave oral guidance after the victim sought help, obtained a written pledge to not contact her, and escorted the suspect through Narita Airport security before he canceled his flight and stayed in Japan.
  • CCTV and records indicate he arrived from South Korea on Aug. 23, lodged near the victim, bought a fruit knife, took a taxi to the scene, and was later located at Haneda Terminal 3; he has remained silent during questioning.
