Tokyo Police Arrest 21-Year-Old Over Slapping of 8-Month-Old Boy

Investigators are focusing on the separate head injuries detected four days later to determine their cause.

Overview

  • Yuta Kaibara, 21, was arrested on suspicion of injuring his partner’s infant by slapping the boy’s face twice at their Edogawa Ward apartment on May 2.
  • Police said the slapping caused facial subcutaneous bleeding, and the suspect has admitted, saying he acted out of irritation.
  • On May 6, the child developed seizures and was taken to a hospital, where doctors found a skull fracture and subarachnoid hemorrhage and alerted police.
  • Investigators believe the head trauma is separate from the earlier assault and likely occurred shortly before the hospital visit, noting the suspect was with the child that evening.
  • The boy is improving without life-threatening conditions and is now under child welfare protection, and police currently view the mother’s involvement as unlikely based on phone analysis.
