Overview

  • Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Superintendent General Tetsuro Kamata, Supreme Public Prosecutors Office Public Security Bureau chief Takashi Koike, and Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office senior prosecutor Koji Ichikawa visited a Yokohama cemetery on August 25 and bowed at Shizuo Aijima’s grave.
  • Officials then held a private meeting of about 40 minutes with Aijima’s wife and two sons before a planned news conference by the family.
  • Aijima, 72, developed cancer while in custody and died still designated a defendant after courts repeatedly denied bail.
  • The visit came after an August 7 verification report by the police and the top prosecutors’ office that recognized unlawful arrest, charging, and detention requests in the case.
  • In May, the Tokyo High Court ruled the investigation by the MPD public security bureau and Tokyo prosecutors was illegal, and while the agencies apologized to company executives in June, the family declined to accept an apology until the findings were made public; the family has now asked for renewed review and reconsideration of disciplinary actions.
