Tokyo and Yokohama Log First Snow of Season as JMA Warns of Further Falls Through Jan. 3

Very cold air at about 5,500 meters is expected to bring the heaviest totals to mountainous northern Kanto.

Overview

  • Snow was observed in central Tokyo and Yokohama on Jan. 2, marking the season’s first in the capital.
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts continued snowfall into Jan. 3 with the greatest accumulation in mountainous northern Kanto.
  • Projected 24-hour totals include up to 10 cm in northern Kanto’s mountains, 4 cm in nearby lowlands, and about 5 cm in Hakone, Tama and Chichibu.
  • Southern Kanto’s non-mountainous areas, including parts of Tokyo, could see around 1 cm of accumulation.
  • The agency links the event to a strong winter-type pressure pattern with air colder than −36°C near 5,500 meters and urges caution for icy roads and travel disruptions.
