Overview

• Police say a rear-end collision occurred around 7:40–7:45 p.m. on Sept. 13 on the southbound Tohoku Expressway in Kanuma, Tochigi.
• The struck vehicle had previously hit the right-side guardrail and was stopped in the passing lane when it was rear-ended, according to the prefectural police.
• The following car was driven by 36-year-old Yuuya Sasamoto of Yokohama, who was traveling with his 6-year-old and 2-year-old sons.
• The 2-year-old suffered a severe head injury and is unconscious, the 6-year-old was injured in the abdomen, and their father reported back pain.
• Tochigi police detained a foreign man around 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 14 believed to have been the driver who fled, and the affected stretch was closed for more than four hours.
