TOEFL iBT debuts AI identity checks and preps for adaptive testing in 2026

The May 30 update enhances home test security with AI identity verification alongside trained proctors, paving the way for adaptive reading and listening sections scheduled for January 2026.

TOEFL

Overview

  • The Home Edition is redesigned from May 30, 2025 to include AI-assisted identity verification (Entrust), ETS-trained in-house proctors and a streamlined registration workflow.
  • Starting January 2026, reading and listening sections will use a multi-stage adaptive design that adjusts question difficulty in real time and incorporates modern academic content to reduce cultural bias.
  • Score reports will display a new 1–6 banded scale aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages alongside the traditional 0–120 scale, with institutions receiving training for smooth adoption.
  • All test center headphones are being replaced globally with Koss-developed custom “stereophones” and new free prep resources will be available to test takers beginning in July.
  • TOEFL iBT score delivery will be accelerated to within 72 hours of testing to help candidates meet critical application deadlines.
