Toddler Rescued From Hot Car in Kleve as Investigation Underway

A report has been submitted to Essen’s youth welfare office after the child received emergency treatment.

Overview

  • On June 13 around 11:40 AM a 24-year-old mother from Essen left her 14-month-old child in a black car parked on Minoritenstraße in direct sunlight at about 30 °C
  • Two forensic officers from the Kleve police discovered the toddler sweating, pale and drowsy in the backseat and patrol colleagues shattered the passenger window to free the child
  • Emergency services cooled and treated the child at the scene before returning the toddler in good health to the mother who arrived roughly 20 minutes after the rescue
  • The mother maintained that her child had been asleep and that she was making a brief shopping trip with the car’s air conditioning already activated
  • Authorities filed a detailed report and have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances of the child’s abandonment in the hot vehicle
