TN Speaker Issues Showcause Notices to Four Ex‑AIADMK MLAs

The notices open anti‑defection proceedings that could confirm resignations, create vacancies and test the Speaker’s authority under the Tenth Schedule.

Overview

  • Speaker J. C. D. Prabhakar said the Assembly Secretariat issued showcause notices on June 9 to Maragatham Kumaravel, S. Jayakumar, P. Sathyabama and Esakki Subaya and gave each seven days to explain their actions.
  • The four had voted for the TVK government in the May 13 confidence vote, resigned their Assembly seats on May 25 and then joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
  • AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami formally condoned the remaining 21 rebel MLAs, and the Speaker has dropped disqualification proceedings against those reconciled members.
  • The Speaker said legal proceedings are under way based on official correspondence, and the Assembly Secretariat has notified vacancies and advised election officers to prepare for possible by‑elections.
  • Under the Tenth Schedule, timely condonation can block disqualification while the Speaker’s decision on the four will test procedural authority and could determine whether the MLAs must seek re‑election before holding ministerial office.
