TMC Puts Voter-Roll Dispute at Heart of Bengal Campaign as Abhishek Banerjee Escalates EC Attack

The voter-roll review now anchors TMC’s message against the Election Commission.

Overview

  • Speaking in Alipurduar on January 3, Abhishek Banerjee labeled the Chief Election Commissioner "Vanish Kumar" over alleged arbitrary deletions and likened BJP MPs to snakes during the second rally of his 19-day tour.
  • The drive began January 2 in Baruipur, where he made the Special Intensive Revision the central issue and brought onstage three people he said were wrongly listed as deceased, claiming 24 such cases in the district.
  • Banerjee cited a December 25 visit to the ECI in Delhi to accuse the poll panel of opacity on deletions, alleging mass removals in the December 16 draft rolls and claiming over 5.8 million names were struck off.
  • Following his outreach, the Election Commission sought a report from the District Electoral Officer on the issues raised.
  • West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya rejected the allegations, noted that SIR is underway in 12 states, urged TMC to move the Supreme Court, and accused TMC workers of vandalizing a BJP help desk.
