Overview
- The Trinamool Congress said it will not nominate any member to the Joint Parliamentary Committee examining three bills that create a framework to remove a prime minister, chief ministers, or ministers after 30 consecutive days in judicial custody.
- The bills—the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025—were introduced in the Lok Sabha by Home Minister Amit Shah.
- The 130th Amendment proposal targets detention for offences punishable by five years or more and links automatic removal to a month of continuous custody without bail.
- Both Houses referred the measures to a 31-member JPC, with 21 Lok Sabha and 10 Rajya Sabha MPs, and directed it to report in the Winter Session expected in late November.
- TMC’s rejection follows chaotic scenes during the bills’ introduction, and a party blog and statement questioned the committee’s neutrality, as a Samajwadi Party source indicated it is also unlikely to send members.
