Overview
- TMC said it will not nominate any member to the Joint Parliamentary Committee set up to examine three bills on removing prime ministers, chief ministers and ministers after 30 days in custody.
- The measures include the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025.
- The bills, moved in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday by Home Minister Amit Shah, were referred to a JPC of 21 Lok Sabha and 10 Rajya Sabha members with a report due in the Winter Session.
- Other INDIA bloc parties have indicated they want to participate to prevent the government from getting a “free run,” with Congress expected to claim four to five seats and DMK and SP signaling readiness.
- Introduction of the bills triggered uproar in the Lok Sabha, including torn copies and angry exchanges, and the TMC formalised its boycott after earlier opposition discussions revealed internal disagreements.
