T.J. Oshie Retires After 16-Year NHL Career

Oshie cited a lingering back injury that sidelined him this past season in an emotional announcement at Washington Harbour.

Overview

  • On June 9, Oshie announced his retirement at Washington Harbour in Georgetown, the same site where the Capitals celebrated their 2018 Stanley Cup victory.
  • The 38-year-old did not play in 2024-25 due to a persistent back injury, which he said prompted his decision to end his career.
  • Drafted 24th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2005, he was traded to Washington in 2015 and became a fan favorite and alternate captain.
  • In the 2018 playoffs, Oshie recorded 21 points in 24 games, including six power-play goals and two game-winners, to help the Capitals capture their first Stanley Cup.
  • He finished with 302 goals, 393 assists and 695 points in 1,010 NHL games and earned the nickname “T.J. Sochi” by scoring four shootout goals against Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
