Tirol Spruce Installed on Munich’s Marienplatz for Christkindlmarkt

The Austrian donation revives a long-running tradition of Alpine municipalities showcasing their regions at Munich's market.

Overview

  • Munich’s professional fire brigade set the roughly 25‑meter spruce in place with heavy equipment and a crane outside the New Town Hall.
  • City lighting crews will add about 3,000 lights before the official switch-on at 5 p.m. on 24 November.
  • The tree will remain illuminated through 6 January, and the trunk will be available from 8 January for reuse such as a maypole.
  • Ellmau secured the donor slot through a decades-old application linked to innkeeper Andreas Hörhager, and the spruce was cut for road-safety reasons.
  • As customary privileges for the donor, Ellmau will operate a Glühwein stand in the town hall courtyard and bring its brass band for the opening.
