Overview
- Since June 30, new Tinder accounts in California must pass a Face Check facial recognition verification during onboarding.
- Users record a short video selfie that is compared to their profile photos and scanned against other accounts for duplicates.
- Raw video selfies are deleted after verification, while non-reversible encrypted face maps remain to guard against fraud.
- The Face Check system operates alongside Tinder’s existing optional ID Check and follows earlier trials in Japan, Canada and Colombia.
- Tinder has no immediate plans to extend the mandatory biometric pilot beyond California pending evaluation of the test.
