Timed Ventilation and Strategic Shading Keep Homes Cool Without Damage

Authorities urge closing windows during peak heat, using brief full openings at cooler hours to regulate indoor temperature.

Overview

  • Windows must stay closed when outdoor heat surpasses indoor temperatures and then be opened fully for 15 to 20 minutes in early morning or late evening to efficiently exchange air.
  • Partially lowering shutters, blinds or curtains with slits open blocks direct sunlight and prevents heat build-up that can shatter windows.
  • Simply tilting windows for hours offers negligible cooling and can counterintuitively raise indoor heat.
  • Monitoring humidity with digital devices to maintain 55–60 percent indoor moisture levels reduces mold risk.
  • After cooking or bathing, quick shock ventilation or leaving bathroom doors open expels humid air, and interior solar films should be avoided unless external installation is approved to prevent glass overheating.
