Tilak Varma Joins Hampshire for Four County Championship Matches

He will begin his stint at Chelmsford on June 22 to gain red-ball experience ahead of India's Test series in England.

Overview

  • Varma will make his County Championship debut for Hampshire against Essex at Chelmsford from June 22–25 and is available for four matches concluding with a fixture against Worcestershire from July 29 to August 1.
  • He has played 29 times for India across T20Is and ODIs, highlighted by a match-winning 72 not out against England in January and back-to-back T20I centuries against South Africa in November.
  • His first-class resume includes 1,204 runs in 18 matches at an average of 50.16, featuring five centuries and four half-centuries.
  • Varma has scored just under 1,500 runs in 54 IPL appearances for Mumbai Indians at an average of 37.47 and a strike rate of 144.41.
  • Hampshire director of cricket Giles White hailed him as an “exciting talent” whose arrival strengthens the side as they look to build on last season’s runner-up finish.
