Overview
- TikTok’s July 30 public rollout of the Footnotes pilot makes the feature visible to all U.S. users, who can now see and rate crowdsourced notes under videos.
- Since April, nearly 80,000 Americans have joined the Footnotes pilot as vetted contributors eligible to submit and assess contextual annotations.
- To qualify as a contributor, users must be at least 18 years old, have maintained an active TikTok account for over six months, and have no recent Community Standards violations.
- Footnotes appear only on original videos—excluding duets, stitches, and advertiser content—and are selected by a bridging algorithm that guards against brigading.
- The community-driven feature augments TikTok’s Global Fact-Checking Program, which works with more than 20 IFCN-accredited organizations across over 130 markets.
