Overview

  • TikTok Canada has withdrawn sponsorships from the Juno Awards, Toronto International Film Festival, MusiCounts, the National Screen Institute’s TikTok Accelerator for Indigenous Creators and Quebec’s ADISQ.
  • The pullout follows Ottawa’s order to wind down local offices over national security concerns without banning the app for users in Canada.
  • A Nordicity report estimates TikTok’s Canadian arm has added about $1.4 billion to national GDP since 2019 and supported hundreds of creative‐sector jobs.
  • While complying with the shutdown order, TikTok Canada is pursuing a judicial review and has proposed alternative security measures aimed at preserving its Canadian presence.
  • Sarah Simpson-Yellowquill, manager of the Indigenous accelerator program, called the suspension “sad and disheartening” and warned it will leave participants without vital mentorship and career support.
