Tigers Sign Scott Effross to Minor-League Deal

Detroit is taking a low-risk look at the sidearm reliever after injuries derailed his recent seasons.

Overview

  • Effross, 32, signed in December and was placed with Triple-A Toledo; the deal includes a non-roster spring invite and would pay $950,000 if he makes the MLB roster, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.
  • He retains one minor-league option, giving the Tigers flexibility to shuttle him between Toledo and Detroit if he earns a 40-man spot.
  • In 2025 with the Yankees, he posted an 8.44 ERA over 10⅔ MLB innings and a 6.37 ERA across 29⅔ innings at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
  • His recent availability was limited by Tommy John surgery that cost him 2023, back surgery during rehab, and a Grade 2 hamstring strain in spring 2025; New York non-tendered him in November.
  • A sinker–sweeper, pitch-to-contact righty averaging about 89 mph, Effross once excelled with the Cubs and Yankees in 2021–22 (2.78 ERA in 71⅓ innings), which drove the Cubs-to-Yankees trade for Hayden Wesneski.
