Tiger Kills Anti-Poaching Watcher on Patrol in Bandipur

State officials pledged compensation, highlighting calls to tighten patrol safety during ongoing capture operations near human habitations.

Overview

  • Sanna Haida, 56, an Anti-Poaching Camp watcher, was fatally attacked by a tiger around 12:30 p.m. on December 27 near the Maralahalla camp in Bandipur Tiger Reserve.
  • The tiger pounced from thick undergrowth during a patrol and grass seed collection; colleagues raised an alarm that drove it off, but Haida died at the scene.
  • Forest officials recovered the body, confirmed the death at Gundlupet Government Hospital, and conducted a postmortem at Chamarajanagar Government Hospital as per procedure.
  • Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre condoled the death, said support will be provided to the family under rules, and ordered strict adherence to safety protocols for patrols.
  • The incident follows a recent rise in tiger-related cases in the Bandipur–Nagarahole region, including human and tiger deaths, as an operation to capture five tigers near a quarry continues with elephant support.
