Tier II and III Cities Lead India’s September Hiring With 21% Surge, Foundit Says

Foundit links the jump to festive-season demand alongside a longer-term shift of employers into smaller hubs.

Overview

  • India’s white-collar hiring rose 17% year on year and 4% month on month in September, with non-metro markets outpacing metros 21% to 14%, according to the latest Foundit Insights Tracker.
  • Hiring momentum in smaller cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Surat, Nagpur and Chandigarh was fueled by e-commerce warehousing, retail expansion, customer support centers and festive tourism.
  • Consumer-facing sectors posted the strongest gains, with e-commerce up 21%, hospitality up 24% and gig roles up 28% in September.
  • Across job functions, sales and marketing grew about 5% year on year, customer support and operations about 4%, creative and media about 4%, technology and product about 3% and finance and accounting about 2%.
  • Metro hiring grew 14% year on year, led by IT, BFSI and media and entertainment, while Foundit’s hiring index reached 380 from 324 a year earlier, reflecting online job postings rather than completed hires.
