Thyssenkrupp to Halt Electrical-Steel Output at Two Plants Through Year-End

The company blames a surge of low-priced Asian imports for collapsing orders.

Overview

  • Production at Gelsenkirchen in Germany and Isbergues in France will stop from mid-December until the end of the year, with Isbergues then running at about half capacity for at least four months.
  • Thyssenkrupp says roughly 1,200 jobs at the two sites are at risk due to the cuts.
  • The affected product is grain-oriented electrical steel used in transformers and wind turbines, and only two producers remain in Europe.
  • Management is urging EU trade protections as company-reported import volumes have tripled since 2022 and rose another 50% in 2025.
  • The move comes within a broader restructuring that includes potential sale interest from Jindal and plans to cut or outsource up to 11,000 jobs, according to company disclosures.
