Overview

  • A truck carrying alkylsulfonic acid aquaplaned on a rain-slicked A4 segment between Nohra and Erfurt-Vieselbach on Monday and collided with the central barrier, causing a corrosive spill.
  • Fire brigades from Erfurt, Weimar and Weimarer Land set up a 500-meter hazard zone, pumped acid from damaged containers and transferred intact loads to secure vehicles.
  • The 37-year-old driver was seriously injured, freed by firefighters from his cabin and airlifted to hospital, while three first responders and one firefighter experienced respiratory irritations.
  • Cleanup operations overnight allowed two lanes toward Chemnitz to reopen under restrictions, but the carriageway toward Erfurt remains fully closed for decontamination.
  • Emergency services have not announced a timetable for full reopening as they continue hazardous materials containment and cleanup efforts.
