Overview
- Multiple Thuringian counties and several independent cities now have formal restrictions on taking water from rivers, lakes and ponds.
- Many districts prohibit mechanical extraction with pumps or hoses, some permit only hand-held containers, and a few ban any removal from surface waters.
- A small number of jurisdictions maintain long-standing rules: Erfurt and Gera cite permanent orders in place since 2019, and Sonneberg and Suhl have similar multi-year measures.
- Local authorities are enforcing the orders with warnings and fines, and Sonneberg reported numerous violations with penalties ranging from hundreds to several thousand euros and up to €50,000 in rare cases.
- Officials say they base decisions on the Thuringian Environment Agency’s Niedrigwasserportal and will review temporary measures through the autumn as water levels evolve.
