Thunderstorm Alerts Span UK and U.S., With Flood Risks and 55 mph Gusts

Recent drought and very dry soils are producing quick runoff that has raised flash-flood concerns.

Overview

  • The Met Office’s yellow thunderstorm warning covered much of England and Wales on Sept. 4 from 2 a.m. to 5 p.m., with forecasters citing 30–60 mm of rain in an hour plus hail and frequent lightning.
  • The Environment Agency issued flood alerts in advance, noting England had just seen its wettest week in seven months and reporting rising river levels in multiple catchments.
  • UK officials warned of spray and sudden flooding, difficult driving, possible road closures and public transport delays, and a slight chance of power cuts during the warning window.
  • In the U.S., the National Weather Service posted short-term advisories Sept. 4–6 for storms in parts of Alabama, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, including gusts up to about 55 mph and pea-size to larger hail.
  • A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remained in effect until midnight for Middle Tennessee as late as Friday, with additional late-night alerts into early Saturday for north Alabama counties and localized flooding risk.
