Overview

  • Westchester County Police arrested 18-year-old Elvin Ayavaca of White Plains, 19-year-old Richard Barrero of Harrison and an unnamed 17-year-old on counts of arson, burglary and criminal mischief Friday.
  • Investigators continue to search for a fourth suspect believed to have joined the group that vandalized both floors of the 142-year-old tower on May 31.
  • Officials estimate the fire and destruction of antique furnishings and at least 35 rare books inflicted more than $100,000 in damage to the museum-like first floor.
  • The 60-foot landmark had reopened to tours this spring after a $4 million renovation the previous year, which restored its historic spotlight and interior.
  • Police said surveillance showed the suspects crossing a bridge to the site around 3:30 a.m. and urged anyone with information on the remaining suspect to come forward.
