Three Teens Arrested in Killing of Marine Veteran Rideshare Driver in Harris County

Charges include capital murder for a 15-year-old — evidence-tampering for two younger boys.

Overview

  • Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced that boys ages 13, 14, and 15 were taken into custody in connection with the Sept. 4 shooting death of Quoc “Jake” Nguyen.
  • The 15-year-old was arrested on Oct. 9, and the two younger teens were arrested Thursday; all three are held at the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center.
  • Investigators say the teens shot Nguyen, took his vehicle and belongings, and fled the area.
  • Deputies initially responded to what appeared to be a hit-and-run before finding a gunshot wound, with evidence indicating Nguyen’s body was dragged and his vehicle rolled from a nearby apartment complex.
  • Nguyen, 28, a Marine Corps veteran who was driving for Uber to support his mother and sister, was found around 11 p.m. by a passing motorist who performed CPR before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
