Overview
- Toronto police say the probe began with a July 25 abduction of a cryptocurrency exchange owner and grew into a wider investigation that led to seven arrests and 82 charges.
- Three accused are reservists in the 7th Toronto Regiment and face charges including kidnapping for ransom, forcible confinement and multiple firearms offences.
- Search warrants recovered at least four firearms, two 3D-printed handguns, two silencers, and roughly 2,500–2,700 rounds of ammunition with police saying about half were blanks and much allegedly came from military stores.
- Investigators also seized large amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine and say there is no confirmed link to larger organized-crime groups as the active probe works to map how the seven suspects were connected.
- The Department of National Defence has removed the accused from duties, restricted their access, opened an administrative review of ammunition controls, and the case is likely to prompt tighter military oversight and scrutiny of crimes targeting crypto holders.
