The RTL/ntv Trendbarometer highlights eroding base support alongside a sharpening focus on age.

Overview

  • Seventy-four percent say CDU/CSU should not nominate Friedrich Merz again for 2029, while 16 percent recommend another run.
  • Only 18 percent would personally welcome another Merz candidacy, and 73 percent reject it.
  • Among Union supporters, 44 percent favor renominating Merz and 43 percent would prefer a different candidate.
  • Support from other parties’ voters is sparse: AfD 6 percent, Die Linke 5 percent, Greens 10 percent, and SPD respondents largely advise against a rerun both strategically (79 percent) and personally (80 percent).
  • The Forsa survey for RTL/ntv polled 1,002 people on Nov. 6–7 with a ±3 percentage-point margin of error and found 45 percent say leaders over 70 can serve effectively, while 52 percent prefer someone younger.
