Overview

  • The newly hatched chicks emerged from three eggs on June 20 at Montrose Beach, while a fourth egg was ruled non-viable the following day.
  • Imani, hatched at Montrose Beach in 2021, and Sea Rocket, released at the same site in 2023, have successfully nested there for a second consecutive year.
  • Volunteers from Chicago Piping Plovers and Chicago Park District staff are enforcing protected nesting zones and conducting regular checks to deter predators.
  • The hatch coincides with regional conservation gains, as 82 Piping Plover breeding pairs have been recorded in the Great Lakes this season.
  • This success builds on efforts launched after Monty and Rose became the first Piping Plovers to nest in Chicago in over 70 years in 2019.
