Overview

  • A minor G1 geomagnetic storm is forecast from June 24 through June 25, sustaining the northern lights show.
  • Skywatchers in at least 10 northern U.S. states—including Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Maine, Wyoming and South Dakota—and in cities like Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver may see the aurora.
  • Auroral activity is expected to reach a moderate Kp index of around 4 on the 0–9 scale, offering pleasing light displays.
  • The best viewing opportunities run between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time in locations far from light pollution.
  • The ongoing solar maximum, which began in October 2024 and will last through 2026, is boosting the frequency of geomagnetic storms and expanding auroral visibility to lower latitudes.
