Three Manipur‑Tagged Amur Falcons Complete Arabian Sea Crossing to Somalia

Wildlife scientists say near‑real‑time tracking with 3.5‑gram tags is informing protections along a well‑used flyway.

Overview

  • The Wildlife Institute of India confirmed that Apapang and Alang arrived in Somalia on 18 November and Ahu reached by the morning of 19 November (India time).
  • Tracking data show Apapang covered nearly 5,400 km in about 5 days 15 hours, including an uninterrupted Arabian Sea flight of roughly 3,100 km in around 76 hours.
  • The birds were captured in Manipur and released on 11 November, after which they traversed central India with recorded passages over Velas, Virar and Malvan in Maharashtra.
  • After landfall, Apapang moved a further ~1,000 km across Somalia toward areas near the Kenya border, bringing his total distance to about 6,100 km in just over six days.
  • Manipur has imposed a 10–30 November hunting ban with mandatory surrender of airguns, as researchers note the falcons fuel up on mass‑emerging termites at stopovers in Manipur and Nagaland.
