Three Killed, One Seriously Injured in Isle of Wight Helicopter Crash During Lesson

AAIB investigators have opened an inquiry into the Robinson R44 II crash near Shanklin.

Overview

  • Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said three people died at the scene and a fourth was flown to University Hospital Southampton in a serious condition.
  • The helicopter, a Robinson R44 II registered G‑OCLV and operated by Northumbria Helicopters, had departed Sandown Airport around 9am for a flying lesson with four people on board including the pilot.
  • Police were alerted at 9.24am to the crash in a field near the A3020 Shanklin Road by Ventnor/Shanklin, and the road was closed for a large multi‑agency response.
  • The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, fire crews from Newport, Ventnor and Shanklin, and Coastguard Rescue 175 attended, and a major incident declared at 9.47am was later stood down.
  • The AAIB has launched an investigation and deployed inspectors, and Northumbria Helicopters says it is cooperating as officers secure the site and contact families.
