Three Killed, One Critically Injured in Isle of Wight Helicopter Crash During Lesson

Overview

  • Police confirmed the helicopter came down in a field near the A3020 Shanklin Road on Monday morning after departing Sandown Airport around 9am.
  • Operator Northumbria Helicopters said the Robinson R44 II, registration G-OCLV, was conducting a flying lesson with four people on board including the pilot.
  • Three people died at the scene, and one survivor is in a serious condition after being airlifted by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance to University Hospital Southampton.
  • A major incident was declared at 9:47am to coordinate the multi-agency response and was later stood down, with road closures remaining and the public asked to avoid the area.
  • No cause has been released, and witnesses reported the aircraft was spiralling before it struck a hedge as the AAIB begins its investigation.
