Three Killed in Lake St. Clair Boat Collision, Probe Underway

Investigators are reconstructing the crash with navigation data, video and dive recovery before submitting evidence to the county prosecutor for review.

Overview

  • The crash occurred on Wednesday night, Oct. 7, near MacRay Harbor when a 23-foot Formula Thunderbird capsized after colliding with a 28-foot Sea Ray Sundancer.
  • Three people recovered from the overturned Formula were pronounced dead and identified as Craig Miller, 52; Heidi Baldwin, 56; and Gerald Grzadzinski, 64, while a 58-year-old woman who swam ashore was hospitalized and is expected to recover.
  • The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said investigators brought one person in for questioning and later released them pending further investigation and potential referral to the Macomb County Prosecutor.
  • Detectives are analyzing speed and navigation data, reviewing video, examining onboard equipment and using underwater search-and-rescue work to recreate the sequence of events, a process officials say is technically complex.
  • Commanders urged the public to avoid unverified online speculation and cautioned that evidence collection and forensic analysis could take weeks before any charging decision is made.
