Three Killed as Semi Rolls and Burns on I-70 Near Eisenhower Tunnel

Colorado State Patrol is pursuing leads in case VC250372 with victim identification pending.

Overview

  • The Freightliner Cascadia went off the right side of westbound I-70 near milepost 208, reentered, struck the center barrier, rolled, and became fully engulfed in flames, according to state troopers.
  • The crash occurred around 5:42 a.m. on Oct. 12 in Summit County near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel.
  • Authorities said the victims were a 37-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man from Deming, New Mexico, and a 9-year-old girl from Jacksonville, Florida, all pronounced dead at the scene.
  • No other vehicles were involved, and extensive fire and damage initially made it difficult to confirm the number of occupants.
  • Westbound I-70 was closed between Exit 216 and Exit 205 for nearly 12 hours and reopened around 6 p.m.; witnesses are asked to call CSP at 970-249-4392 and reference VC250372.
