Three Killed and Two Injured After Family Car Veers Into Patna Canal

Authorities suspect driver fatigue on a poorly lit stretch without guardrails, renewing calls for safety upgrades along canal-bordering roads.

Two people who have suffered injuries were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Overview

  • The crash occurred at around 4:30 am on July 12 when the family’s Maruti Alto veered off the highway near Saraiya village in Ranitalab and plunged into the Sone canal.
  • Police and local residents used a JCB excavator to retrieve the vehicle and rushed the victims to a nearby hospital before transferring the injured to Patna AIIMS.
  • The deceased are identified as Nirmala Devi (52), her daughter-in-law Neetu Singh (35) and grandson Ashtitwa Singh (10), while driver Nandan Singh and his daughter Siddhi are in stable condition.
  • The family had been returning from Chhattisgarh to their native Mahua village in Vaishali district to attend a function.
  • The incident underscores recurring canal-plunge fatalities linked to night travel fatigue, lack of protective barriers and gaps in emergency response capabilities.
