Overview

  • At least three people were killed and many others injured when two carriages of a Deutsche Bahn regional express derailed and one flipped in a remote forest near Riedlingen in the Biberach district on Sunday evening.
  • The train, carrying about 100 passengers from Sigmaringen to Ulm, left the tracks at around 6:10 p.m. local time under stormy conditions.
  • Emergency responders including fire brigades, rescue crews and police have worked through dense woodland using saws to reach and extricate trapped passengers.
  • Federal and local police have launched a formal investigation into the accident, with early media reports suggesting a possible landslide triggered by severe storms.
  • Deutsche Bahn said it is fully cooperating with investigators as service on the Sigmaringen–Ulm route remains suspended pending safety inspections.
