Overview
- Police say the trio assaulted Borkum, a 64-year-old homeless man, on Hogan Street three times between 9:44 p.m. and 10:48 p.m., and were seen rummaging through his backpack.
- After the second attack, a witness summoned Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, then the assailants returned for a third assault before another witness called 911.
- Responders later found Borkum, a former World Trade Center consultant laid off in July 2001, with severe head injuries, a pool of blood and a trail along the sidewalk, and he died four days later at a hospital.
- Within hours, officers arrested Justin Curry, now 13, Marcavion Lacey, 19, and Robert Pope, 17, with Curry identified as 12 years old on the night of the attack.
- A grand jury indicted all three on murder charges on Nov. 20, and one suspect told investigators the confrontation began after Borkum allegedly disrespected their “dead homies.”
