Three Gaza Children Arrive in Bay Area for Extended Medical Care

Their arrival highlights Gaza’s crippled health infrastructure following a complex exit approval process tangled in visa delays.

Overview

  • Three Gaza children aged 6 to 14 arrived at San Francisco International Airport on August 6 under HEAL Palestine’s medical evacuation program, marking the 37th group of minors evacuated since January 2024.
  • Anas, 8, who lost his father in a bombing and suffered shattered leg bones, will undergo reconstructive surgery in Oakland; Ghazal, 6, wounded by blast fragments, will receive care in the South Bay; and Leyan, 14, burned and pierced by shrapnel, is slated for specialized treatment at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
  • HEAL Palestine secured Israeli exit approvals and medical visas, overcoming a November waitlist for one child, to bring the trio to the U.S.
  • Dr. Mohammed Subeh, who treated two of the children on volunteer missions, said Gaza’s few operating hospitals are running on bare-minimum resources and focusing solely on lifesaving damage control.
  • The children will remain in Bay Area hospitals for six to twelve months before transferring to Egyptian facilities for continued rehabilitation and an eventual return to Palestine.
