Three Fishermen Missing After Boat Capsizes on Paraná

High flows are hampering searches by strengthening currents, which increases flood risk for riverside communities.

Overview

  • A small boat overturned on the Paraná near San Lorenzo and Fray Luis Beltrán on Thursday night, and one survivor, Rogelio Cabrera, swam to shore and alerted authorities.
  • Prefectura Naval, volunteer fire brigades, dive teams, drones and jetskis are carrying out coordinated surface and underwater searches that have been extended downstream toward the Rosario–Victoria bridge under the guidance of federal prosecutor Agustín Mori.
  • No trace of the three missing men — identified as Ezequiel Estegelman, Héctor Flores and Gustavo Muñoz — has been confirmed and teams say strong currents and high water are making rastrillajes and diving operations difficult.
  • In a separate incident, two rural workers surnamed Ledesma and Salazar disappeared near isla Ibirapitá in Corrientes while moving livestock, authorities found a drowned horse at the site and Prefectura together with rural police launched island and river searches.
  • The Paraná’s sustained rise has forced hundreds to evacuate, prompted formal navigation warnings from Prefectura and could further limit rescue efforts if upstream discharges and heavy basin rainfall continue.
