Three Finalists Emerge in USWNT Coach Search: Tony Gustavsson, Joe Montemurro, Laura Harvey
Decision expected by November 27 as U.S. Soccer Federation narrows down candidates for USWNT coaching position to Australian coach Tony Gustavsson, Juventus' Joe Montemurro, and NWSL's coach of the year Laura Harvey.
- The U.S. Soccer Federation is nearing a decision on the new coach for the U.S. women's national team (USWNT) with three finalists identified - Australian coach Tony Gustavsson, Juventus boss Joe Montemurro, and NWSL's coach of the year Laura Harvey.
- The USWNT coach position became vacant on Aug. 17 when Vlatko Andonovski resigned after the team's round of 16 exit at the 2023 Women's World Cup, which was the program's worst-ever finish.
- Also, both Tony Gustavsson and Laura Harvey have previous ties to the U.S. program - Gustavsson was an assistant to Jill Ellis during the Americans' successful run to the 2015 and 2019 World Cup titles, while Harvey was a former coach of the U.S. U-20 women's national team.
- An issue that may affect Gustavsson's chances is whether he would be expected to live in the U.S. full-time, given that he is presently leading Australia and has recently guided the team to fourth-place finishes at both the Tokyo Olympics and the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
- Lastly, the U.S. Soccer Federation aims to complete the coach search ahead of a couple of friendlies against China scheduled for early December, thus the decision is expected to be announced by November 27.
