Three Female Gorillas Arrive at San Antonio Zoo for Congo Falls Opening

The transfers follow the AZA Gorilla Species Survival Plan to seed a new troop in a purpose-built two-acre habitat.

Overview

  • Andi, Merry, and Anaka arrived safely from Zoo Atlanta, where they were born and raised, according to the zoos.
  • Congo Falls opens to the public on Dec. 13 at 10 a.m., with a ribbon cutting and a nighttime drone show included with admission and free for members.
  • The habitat features three areas—Lowland Basin, Indoor Rainforest, and Gorilla Gorge—plus a pool with a 30-foot waterfall and a 70-foot tower with 360-degree views.
  • The exhibit is planned to house seven western lowland gorillas at launch, with these three forming part of the initial group.
  • A planned transfer of Dallas Zoo’s 23-year-old male, Zola, ended with his Nov. 5 death, and San Antonio Zoo says the opening timeline remains unchanged.
