Three Die in Separate P.E.I. Highway Crashes as Roads Reopen
Prince District RCMP is investigating both crashes following extended closures to establish the factors behind each rollover.
Overview
- On June 27 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a potato truck driven by a man in his 40s overturned on Route 2 in Carleton, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
- At around 8 p.m. the same day, a single-vehicle crash on Route 163 near Burleigh Road in East Bideford killed a 22-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man and injured a woman in her 20s, who remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
- Both highways were closed for several hours, and access to Lennox Island was blocked until about 1:20 a.m. on June 28.
- O’Leary, Lennox Island and Tyne Valley fire departments joined Island EMS, the Department of Transportation and other agencies to manage the scenes.
- Investigators say initial indications suggest the Carleton truck veered off the road before overturning, and collision reconstruction teams are examining both crash sites.
