Three Dead in North Austin Target Shooting; Suspect in Custody

Investigators have secured the scene, processing evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses looking to determine the gunman’s motive.

Overview

  • Police and ATCEMS arrived within minutes of a 2:15 p.m. call to the Target at 8601 Research Boulevard and found three people shot in the parking lot.
  • Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene and a third died after being taken to a hospital, while a fourth person received treatment for unrelated injuries.
  • The 32-year-old white male suspect, described as having a history of mental health issues and prior police contacts, fled in a stolen car, crashed it, carjacked another vehicle and was detained in South Austin after being tased.
  • Authorities closed the 8000 block of the MoPac southbound frontage road and are holding vehicles in the parking lot pending completion of evidence collection.
  • Austin Police Department is processing the crime scene, reviewing surveillance footage and urging witnesses to submit tips as the investigation into motive and victim identities continues.
