Three Data Centers Secure All 228 MW Offered in Brazil’s First PNAST Allocation
The result signals rising strain on transmission capacity, with auction proceeds designated for measures to lower consumer electricity tariffs.
Overview
- The first competitive allocation under the new Política Nacional de Acesso ao Sistema de Transmissão awarded 228 MW across four connection points in São Paulo to Pahlavan One, Pahlavan Three and Digital DC Brasil after the process concluded on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
- Seven projects sought 451 MW of capacity, nearly double what was available, making this the first time leftover transmission capacity was distributed by competition rather than by registration order.
- ONS and the Ministry of Mines and Energy presented the season results in Brasília on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and said PNAST will run at least two access seasons per year starting in 2027.
- Industry executives warned that rapid data-center growth, boosted by the Redata tax regime, could outpace transmission expansion and become a bottleneck for new projects unless grid investment and more allocation rounds accelerate.
- The government plans to direct revenues from competitive allocations to modicidade tarifária, a set of measures intended to reduce electricity costs for consumers, while regulators work to balance large new loads with broader tariff impacts.
