Three Brothers in Bonham, Texas, Die After Falling Through Frozen Pond

The drownings occurred during a North Texas freeze that closed schools, leaving a thin ice cover on a private pond.

Overview

  • Authorities said the boys, ages 6, 8 and 9, went into a private pond across from a house where the family was staying north of Bonham on Monday.
  • Family members identified the victims as Howard, 6, Kaleb, 8, and EJ, 9.
  • First responders and a neighbor pulled the 8- and 9-year-olds from the water, the 6-year-old was found after an extensive search, and all later died at a hospital.
  • Their mother, Cheyenne Hangaman, said she jumped in to rescue them but her body locked up in the freezing water; a neighbor pulled her out and a local coach attempted to help.
  • Bonham ISD offered counseling after calling the loss unimaginable, and the sheriff’s office with Texas Game Wardens issued condolences, thanked assisting agencies, and noted the investigation continues.
