Three Bodies Recovered After Pacific Grove Plane Crash, FAA and NTSB Launch Investigations

Monterey County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims following a multi-agency recovery operation at sea

Overview

  • The twin-engine Beechcraft 95-B55 Baron departed San Carlos Airport around 10 p.m. on July 26 and crashed approximately 200–300 yards off Point Pinos Lighthouse en route to Monterey Regional Airport.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Station Monterey deployed a 29-foot response boat and MH-65 Dolphin helicopters alongside CAL FIRE boats, local police and Monterey county crews for the overnight search.
  • Crews recovered three unresponsive occupants between 3:01 a.m. and 9:08 a.m. on July 27 and identified them as Steven Eugene Clatterbuck, James Vincent and Jamie Lee Tabscott.
  • The FAA issued an Alert Notice (ALNOT) for the missing Beechcraft and both the FAA and NTSB have opened formal investigations into the cause of the crash.
  • Debris including a wheel and fuselage fragments washed ashore near Asilomar State Beach and is being secured for forensic examination
