A three-alarm fire broke out on the Texas Woman’s University Denton campus at the new Health Science Center on Thursday morning, Aug. 7, the Denton Fire Department said.

Overview

  • Denton Fire Department crews arrived shortly after 9 a.m. and brought the fire under control in the roof and attic area by 11 a.m.
  • All construction workers evacuated safely; one was treated for smoke inhalation and released, and several firefighters received treatment for heat-related issues.
  • The three-alarm fire remains confined to the attic with crews working to extinguish remaining hotspots.
  • Officials have launched an inquiry into the blaze’s origin and will assess structural damage before allowing construction to resume.
  • The $107 million, 136,000-square-foot facility was scheduled to open for classes on Aug. 25, raising concerns about potential delays to its debut.
